How they are chosen

The pictures here may all be reused freely: each is in the public domain or under a Creative Commons licence. Wikimedia Commons supplied most of them and Flickr the rest, and some are 1960s press photographs from Anefo, the Dutch agency. Most of the licences ask for a credit, so each picture carries one wherever it is shown, and the list below gathers them. Every picture appears as its source published it, but a frame may crop it.

Some pages show a stand-in (a replica, another Spitfire or a place), and its caption says what it shows, never presenting it as the subject. A stand-in at the head of a page is also labelled "Stand-in" on the picture and at the start of its caption.
